On Thursday, November 20, senior Computer and Communications Engineering (CCE) students Mohammad Shaaban and Mohammad El Halabi carried learning beyond the classroom during a visit to the Lebanese School for the Blind and Deaf (LSBD) as part of their Bachelor of Engineering project, VISION – A Wearable Ecosystem for the Visually Impaired. The project is supervised by RHU Professor Dr. Rached Zantout and Associate Professor Dr. Maher Sabbah, with the dedicated contributions of Manar Merhi, Malek Shibli, and Abdulrahman Nakouzi.
Rooted in real-world impact, the visit allowed students to engage directly with more than 15 individuals with visual impairments, listen to their stories, understand their daily mobility and safety challenges, and gain valuable insights that will influence a truly human-centered assistive solution. These exchanges reinforced the team’s commitment to designing technology that addresses genuine needs and empowers users with greater independence and confidence.
The experience was both meaningful and inspiring, reminding students of engineers' responsibility to use innovation for the benefit of society. Adding to the importance of the day, the team watched a heartfelt theatre performance by children and adults with disabilities in celebration of Lebanese Independence Day, a powerful display of resilience, inclusion, and the unifying strength of community.
RHU extends its sincere appreciation to the Lebanese School for the Blind and Deaf for its warm welcome and collaborative spirit and proudly supports initiatives that turn engineering knowledge into purpose-driven innovation.
