From RHU to global impact: RHU alumnus journey at the forefront of digital health and AI

After graduating from RHU in 2013 with a Master of Science in biomedical engineering, Dr. Ramzi Halabi has demonstrated innovation, global collaboration, and leadership at the intersection of biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, and digital mental health. What started as a solid academic base at RHU quickly grew into an international career across Europe, North America, and the Middle East, focusing on transforming healthcare through technology and research. He currently serves as a digital health consultant at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Canada and holds research and academic roles at leading international institutions.

Advancing Knowledge Across Leading Global Institutions

Driven by a passion for research and innovation, Dr. Halabi pursued a PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a specialization in Signal Processing at the Université de Lyon, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in digital health at the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Canada’s leading mental health research institution.

Recognizing the growing role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, he further strengthened his expertise by completing AI in Healthcare specialization programs at Stanford University and Johns Hopkins University, positioning himself at the forefront of a rapidly evolving field.

Leadership in Digital Health, Research, and Education

Professionally, Dr. Halabi’s career reflects a unique blend of research, consulting, entrepreneurship, and academic engagement. He is a Digital Health Consultant at CAMH and a Consultant and Research Scientist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

He is also the CTO and Biomedical Engineering Lead at b.r.a.i.n., a consulting firm co-founded to provide research and development mentorship in digital mental health solutions, supporting innovation-driven teams and early-stage initiatives.

In parallel, he remains deeply committed to education and knowledge sharing, serving as a Consultant and Sessional Lecturer in AI in Healthcare at the American University of Beirut (AUB), and contributing to the academic community as an Academic Editor and Reviewer for PLoS Digital Health.

Global Recognition, Research Excellence, and Innovation

His work has received international recognition, including the Best Research Presentation Award at the University of Toronto's Psychiatry Research Day. As a co-investigator, he has contributed to multiple competitive research grants funded by leading institutions, including the NIH, NIMH, and CIHR.

His research has also led to innovation, with two patents filed for new signal processing algorithms designed to predict mood episodes using wearable technologies, an advancement with important implications for personalized and preventive mental healthcare. Throughout his career, he has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, delivered talks and workshops, co-supervised Master’s and PhD theses, and collaborated with scientists and institutions across Canada, the United States, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Lebanon.

A Continued Commitment to Global Health and AI

In recognition of his expertise and leadership, he holds several honorary affiliations, including Scientist Member at T-CAIREM (University of Toronto), Canada’s leading center for AI in healthcare education, and Senior Fellow in AI for Global Health at AUB’s Global Health Institute.

Inspired by RHU, Shaping the Future

This journey reflects not only individual excellence but also the impact of RHU’s mission to empower graduates with the skills, curiosity, and values needed to lead globally. From RHU classrooms to world-class institutions, this alumnus continues to shape the future of healthcare through innovation, collaboration, and purpose.

    And the journey continues.
