RHU Provost discusses Ebola outbreak and global response on Sputnik Arabic

On Tuesday, May 19, RHU Provost and Professor of Microbiology, Dr. Mahmoud Halablab, participated in an interview on Sputnik Arabic to discuss the recent Ebola health emergency and the global efforts to contain the virus. Dr. Halablab explained that the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus is considered the most dangerous, with mortality rates that can reach up to 50% or higher in some outbreaks.

While the virus is not new, previous cases were reported in 2007 and 2012. He emphasized that there is currently no definitive cure for Ebola, and treatment mainly focuses on managing symptoms and ensuring early detection and isolation of infected cases to prevent wider transmission.

Dr. Halablab also highlighted healthcare challenges in regions such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, where limited medical infrastructure and difficult living conditions complicate efforts to control the spread of the disease across borders. He noted the importance of international cooperation and support, including Russia’s intervention to help contain the outbreak, stressing that the World Health Organization cannot face such crises alone.

The discussion further addressed the urgent need for mRNA-based vaccine development, which could accelerate production within a few months. Dr. Halablab reassured viewers that there is currently no reason for widespread concern unless cases begin spreading beyond affected regions, while emphasizing that strict isolation measures remain a top priority.
