RHU Provost and Professor of Microbiology, Dr. Mahmoud Halablab, was interviewed by the BBC to discuss the recent Ebola case reported in Brazil and the global efforts underway to contain the virus.
During the interview, Dr. Halablab emphasized that there is currently no indication of a worldwide spread of the disease, noting that the reported case involves an individual who had traveled from an affected region in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He highlighted the critical role of the World Health Organization and the international community in supporting containment efforts through financial assistance, medical supplies, diagnostic testing, and logistical support for Congo’s healthcare system.
Dr. Halablab also discussed ongoing vaccine development efforts at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London, noting that one vaccine could become available within the coming months if proven effective. While no specific treatment for Ebola currently exists, he explained that supportive care can help reduce the severity of symptoms and improve recovery outcomes.
He stressed that all age groups are susceptible to infection, although children and older adults remain particularly vulnerable due to generally weaker immune systems. Dr. Halablab further underscored the importance of safe burial practices, case monitoring, isolation measures, proper hand hygiene, and the use of protective equipment in preventing transmission.
Reflecting on previous outbreaks, he noted that this is the 17th Ebola outbreak recorded in Congo and the third involving the current strain, expressing optimism that the country’s experience and international support will help bring the outbreak under control once again.
